Today Lufthansa passengers enjoy the advantages of electronic tickets as part of their daily life. But how did the Lufthansa etix® success story actually start?
The electronic ticket began in May 1995 as a pilot project for selected members on the Frankfurt – Berlin route. From March 1996 it was possible for Senators to fly paperless with a chip card before, in November of the same year, etix® eventually became available to all Lufthansa passengers.
Initially, only passengers on German domestic flights as well as passengers to London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle were able to enjoy the advantages of etix®. By 2001 the offer had been extended to more than 160 destinations in 40 countries. Interlining agreements with Scandinavian Airlines or United Airlines enabled a smooth data transfer. From April 2004 the booking of a paperless flight ticket was possible even without presenting personal identification such as a Miles & More card, Star Alliance card, credit or EC card.
Since 1 June 2008 electronic tickets only have been issued. This is not only environmentally friendly but passengers can also enjoy numerous advantages. For example tickets can be booked and rebooked at shorter notice. They also save time, for example, through the online boarding pass with seat selection, and help protect against losing or forgetting the ticket.
