Lufthansa’s baggage service innovations

Rethinking Airtravel: Lufthansa’s digital baggage services are practical and convenient:

Check your baggage at any time

With the Lufthansa app and as a Lufthansa passenger, you can enjoy the reassurance of knowing where your baggage is at all times. From check-in to baggage reclaim you can find out about the current status of your baggage via your mobile device. 

Immediately after checking in your baggage at the counter or at a baggage drop-off kiosk you can check your digital baggage receipt – simply via your mobile boarding pass. This provides a link to the loading status of your baggage at all times. On landing you will be informed via a push notification telling you which carousel your baggage is on. This service is available at Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Milan airports.


Electronic baggage tag for your suitcase

Another innovation is the cooperation between Lufthansa and RIMOWA. Until now baggage had to be manually checked in and labelled with a paper tag, now in future as a Lufthansa passenger you will be able to check in your baggage from home or on the go with the ‘RIMOWA Electronic Tag’ via the Lufthansa app.

Using your digital boarding pass with just a click from your smartphone you can transfer the details via Bluetooth to your personal Smart bag. The baggage details are immediately shown on the display which is integrated into the suitcase. After the suitcase has been checked in in this way, it will in future only need to be placed on the belt at the Lufthansa baggage drop-off counter.

The baggage details shown on the electronic display are the same size and layout as current paper baggage tags. Important information is protected from moisture, heat, cold, dropping and impact stress, and cannot be torn off.


HomeTag: the self-print baggage tag

As part of a trial conducted with the EU Commission Lufthansa is introducing the ‘HomeTag’. For flights within the EU this allows you to print your baggage tag at home on regular paper, and slip it into a holder attached to the suitcase. At the airport baggage drop-off works just as fast and conveniently at the self-service baggage check-in kiosks or at the check-in counter.
